At the beginning, the steamers passengers still had to be ferried to the piers in small boats.

The first pier that enabled steamers to dock right alongside was built in 1887 in Misdroy (the Kaiser Friedrich pier).

In 1893, the Kaiser Wilhelm Pier in Heringsdorf followed, and therewith the first pier on the island of Usedom. As far back as 1897, a smaller pier existed in Zinnowitz.  Since 1909, the new Vineta Pier has meant that steamers can also moor up here. To this day, the piers remain ports of call for ships and popular meeting points for both residents and tourists.
